File Size and Output Resolution Calculators

For the highest quality images on large format printers, it is important (among other image quality issues) to have sufficient resolution in your files for output at any given size. Too much information (resolution) will result in minimal print quality gains, while increasing the amount of time and effort it takes to manipulate and print the file(s). Insufficient resolution, however, can cause defects often described as 'pixelated,' 'bitmapped,' or even 'stairstepped.' To help you determine the file sizes and resolutions required for a given output size, use the guide below.

Resolution Required for Quality Output by Product (in pixels per inch)

4-color 300 dpi printers

8-color 300 dpi printers

4-color 600 dpi printers

6-, 8-, or 12-color 600 dpi printers

After looking up the required resolution from the above chart for your output device, use the file size, resolution, and output size calculators below to determine file size requirements for a desired output size and desired output resolution. Use the first calculator to determine file size requirements for a given output size and desired resolution. Use the second calculator to determine the output resolution of a file of given file size and desired output size. Use the final calculator to determine the output size limitations of a given original size, file size, and desired output resolution.

Note: file sizes calculated below only include image data--actual file sizes will vary according to how much additional data (paths, alpha channels, and other non-image data) is included in the file.

Hit 'Tab' after each entry to calculate the form!
