ColorMark+ Information for BackLit Transform and Profile Creation

This page has CM+ information related to creating transforms and profiles on backlit media.

Backlit films and other media through which light can pass require a transmissive calibrator. The X-Rite DTP-41/T is the only external input device supported by ColorMark+ 1.5 that can take transmissive readings. The DTP-41/T is not currently available directly from ColorSpan; contact X-Rite (www.xrite.com; 616-534-7663) or an X-Rite distributor for information on purchasing a DTP-41/T.

If you already possess a DTP-41/T and ColorMark+ 1.2 or greater, the following information will be helpful to you as you create new ink and media transforms and ICC profiles.

When ColorMark+ prints the linearization strip on a backlit material, the strip will look like this:

(This strip is for a four-color (CMYK) inkset. If you have more colors loaded in your printer, the strip will appear slightly different. All of the information on this page still applies, regardless of inkset.)

Observe the trailing edge of the strip (in the illustration above, the left edge, after the yellow swatches). There is a black, vertical dashed line at the end of the printed area. This dashed line indicates where you must trim the strip. Cut away any excess blank media to the left of the dashed line. Do not cut into the black areas of the strip. Failure to trim the strip correctly will result in calibrator errors.

The leading edge of the strip (in the illustration above, the right edge, before the black swatches) does not ordinarily require any trimming. The strip should print at the right margin of the media, leaving approximately 0.25" of blank media at the edge.

When the color targets are printed, you will again see the dashed line at the trailing edge of the strips. As with the linearization strip described above, carefully trim the target strips so that no blank media remains to the left of the black areas of the strip.
